Tree Maintenence

The hubs and I have spent a good bit of time and money on tree maintenance over the past 10 months. And now I know why "tree work" costs so much. Because they must use a chainsaw like the one seen above. HA! We've removed a gigantic scrubby pine tree in the back yard that literally was leaning at a 45 degree angle into the neighbors yard, right over their kids giant trampoline...yikes! We've also had some trees sprayed for carpenter ants, stupid pests! And most recently we got an old, dead crab apple tree cut down in the front yard. I am all for preserving nature, but this tree was an eyesore, not to mention hollow and dead. So this weekend the hubs and I will be tree-hunting (while the hubs plays golf). We are thinking a purple leaf plum tree like this one...
We need something that will grow fast but not grow to large and we like the unusual purple color of the leaves. What do you think? Stay tuned for an update...

Hi Erika:
Unfortunately, I have to totally agree with you regarding trees/lawn maintenance. All of sudden you start to notice (and covet) other peoples' landcaping. I remember thinking "Wow - they must be loaded to be able to put in so many Blue Spruces....." Or having to save to be able to afford the tree surgeon - WHAT is wrong with THAT picture!!! Gone are the days of saving for a new bag or shoes - you start to dream about unlimited spending at the Garden Center. Have fun and enjoy your new home. It really is worth it in the end. Love your blog! Katie Z

Thanks (Aunt) Katie Z. I've spent more time in Home Depot over the past year than I care to admit! I'll never forget my first trip to HD last spring for flowers...loaded up the cart to the point it was overflowing. Went to pay and almost fell over at the total $ amount. Then got home and realized that the flowers I just purchased would barely fill in one planting bed. YIKES! No one told me about perennials! DUH!
